Born and raised in a small town, Michael Herrin demonstrated an early interest in the dynamics of human behavior and organizational systems. His curiosity about how workplaces functioned and how individuals could work better together led him to pursue a degree in Organizational Psychology at the University of San Andreas, where he quickly earned a reputation for his intellectual curiosity and leadership qualities. As a student, Herrin became deeply involved in university clubs focused on student advocacy and diversity, solidifying his commitment to creating inclusive and supportive environments for all individuals. After completing his degree, he pursued a Master of Public Administration, where he focused on public sector human resources management, a field that intrigued him due to its potential to shape policies that impacted thousands of people.
Upon graduation, Herrin began his career in the private sector, initially working as an HR associate for a multinational corporation. His responsibilities included recruitment, employee relations, training programs, and compliance with labor laws. Over time, Herrin’s skill set expanded as he handled increasingly complex challenges, such as conflict resolution, employee engagement, and the development of programs that promoted diversity and inclusion within the organization. His work in the private sector was marked by a steady rise through the ranks, ultimately becoming a senior HR manager.
However, Herrin’s true calling was in public service, and after several years in the corporate world, he transitioned to the public sector. He joined the county’s Human Resources department in 2012 as an HR consultant, where he immediately set himself apart with his ability to develop strategies that improved efficiency and employee satisfaction. One of his early contributions was the overhaul of the county's employee benefits program, ensuring that it was both financially sustainable and tailored to the diverse needs of the county’s workforce.
Herrin's work was integral to streamlining recruitment processes and improving staff retention. He was recognized for his ability to manage multiple projects while ensuring the well-being of employees across various departments. His understanding of both labor laws and the unique needs of a government workforce allowed him to mediate disputes, manage grievances, and foster a collaborative working environment. Over the next few years, Herrin took on leadership roles, including Director of Employee Services, where he was instrumental in implementing performance management systems that helped managers identify top talent and support professional development initiatives.
In 2020, Herrin was appointed as the Assistant Director of Human Resources, a position that further solidified his reputation as a thoughtful and visionary leader within the county’s HR department. During this time, he worked closely with department heads, elected officials, and the Board of County Commissioners to align the county’s human resources policies with broader goals, including improving workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion, enhancing employee training programs, and ensuring that employees were equipped to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of local government work. He spearheaded initiatives to update outdated personnel policies, introduced new wellness programs, and developed mentorship programs aimed at promoting career growth and employee satisfaction.
Herrin's ability to lead with both empathy and strategic foresight earned him the respect of his colleagues, particularly when it came to addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the county faced unprecedented challenges, Herrin played a key role in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees. He facilitated remote work policies, ensured that employees had access to essential health benefits, and provided clear communication about the evolving landscape of workplace regulations.
By 2025, Herrin’s success within the county HR department made him the natural choice for the position of Director of Human Resources. The Board of County Commissioners recognized his exceptional ability to manage human resources with a focus on both operational excellence and employee well-being. In his new role, Herrin is tasked with overseeing the county’s HR policies, managing talent acquisition and development, and ensuring that the county’s workforce remains equipped to meet the needs of the community it serves.
